As a pregnant mom, you’re probably excited about your maternity session. It captures this incredible time in your life when your body is doing something miraculous and you’re eagerly anticipating meeting your baby for the first time. Your maternity session is the perfect way to document this time in your life beautifully and thoughtfully. A maternity session is essential in guaranteeing all your family memories will never fade. For many women, these sessions have become a rite of passage – and they grow more popular with each year. If you’re preparing for your own maternity session, here are some tips to help you look and feel your best and guaranteed to help you rock your maternity session!
How to choose your photographer
Choosing a photographer can be tricky as there are many Raleigh and Clayton maternity photographers to choose from. When choosing who to hire, there are a few things to consider. The most important thing to consider is whether they have a portfolio. This by far is the most important step. Review the photographer’s portfolio to see if their style of posing, editing and creativity meets your needs. The images that you view in their portfolio is representative of what your images will look upon completion.
Secondly, verify if you want a photographer who is more colorful, creative, or has a simpler classic style (this is me). Clarifying your desired style will ensure you are satisfied with your images. Photographers have their own styles and way of editing. Therefore, if you do not like the images you see on their website or social media you more than likely will not like the images you will receive.
Thirdly, decide on how much you want to spend towards this session. In addition to session fees there may be wardrobe purchases that will add to the budget. Luckily when you hire CoCo Inspirations Photography, you’ll have access to our beautiful maternity gowns, tutus, fabric and much more. To keep cost down seek out a photographer who has a maternity wardrobe closet that will make you feel and look beautiful. Like ME!
Lastly determine if you want a photographer who is also a newborn photographer. An all in one is always a plus. Their newborn images will also be a memory you do not want to miss. Give yourself and baby the gift of their tiny beginning captured thoughtfully and with the beauty they deserve. Do I really need a photographer?
In this world of cell phones, I know hiring a photographer may seen unnecessary. However, professional photographers offer an experience that cannot be found elsewhere. Your cell phone could never produce what a well experienced photographer could. Your maternity session is not only about having beautiful images to look back on, but also the joy of the experience; feeling special, being seen, and spending quality time with your partner or loved ones creating invaluable memories.
Also, something to consider is how often will you take those snapshots. I know I thought I would take a million photos while pregnant and didn’t take but maybe one or two. Hiring a professional photographer will give you not only beautiful images but guaranteed memories to have and pass down. Your baby will love to see how you looked while carrying them one day. Professionals can also find the best angles, lighting and wardrobe to make sure you feel and look amazing. This is one of the most significant moments in your life and it deserves to be captured beautifully to be cherished forever in a well crafted album or prints hanging big on your wall.

Book early in your pregnancy
When it comes to capturing your maternity portraits, timing is everything. By booking your session as early as possible you ensure that you get the photographer and date that works best for you. Maternity sessions usually take place around 28-32 weeks of pregnancy and the weeks will go by quickly. Booking early gives plenty of time for any last minute adjustments or shopping for any clothing or undergarments needed for the shoot. Booking early also takes the pressure and stress off of you worrying about getting it done, this way you can relax knowing your session is booked and ready.
Decide on your session location
Studio or outdoor is a small but important decision. Choosing what setting, look or feel for your images is a detail that is very important for your photographer to know. Photographers want to be able to give their client images that they will love so if nature is what you love then choose the perfect outdoor location and if you prefer the studio look with lighting tricks and different backdrops then book it and rock it.
Prepare for your session
When should you have your maternity session? Maternity sessions should be held when the belly is at it’s roundest which is usually between 23-32 weeks pregnant. You want your belly to be at it’s peak if possible. However, do not be hesitant if you have a tiny belly bump, we will still make it beautiful.
Another detail to consider is when preparing for your session take into account what dresses or wardrobe you will be wearing. Some mamas love gowns, some love causal and some love to be sexy.
Different looks call for different undergarments or accessories. For example, most maternity gowns require a strapless bra. Some gowns are see through, so having a nude, black and white colored bra and underwear are best. I always recommend this color combination to ensure you look amazing in all gowns or garments.
Here are a few things to have in your maternity session bag:
- Black, white and nude undergarments
- Pair of black or nude high heels
- Simple jewelry or accessories
